Help with fish that don't like light.
« on: August 17, 2009, 10:42:30 AM »
Hello,
I have this unusual problem with my tropical tiger barbs & golden barbs not liking the aquarium light on. They all huddle together underneath the plants to hide from the light!!!

I have a 2ft 100 litre aquarium with a 15 watt fluorescent lamp on top, ph is 7.2.

I have tried different strength brightness tubes (10000k & 6500k) but still no joy. I only have the light on for a couple of hours a day to help keep the plants alive but would like to keep it on longer if I could.

Has anyone else had this type of problem? any help would be much appreciated.

Regards, Keith.

Couple of hours isn't sufficient for the majority of plants you need around 8 - 10 hours of light. Haven't kept barbs of any sort for donkeys but don't remember them as being shy in any circumstances so leave the light on longer and they'll adjust to the new environment I'm sure especially as it's only 15w.

you didnt say how many barbs you have.

I suggest you get yourself six or more. they like to be in a large group. anything smaller, and they will hide under leaves and so forth.

the other thing to try is to keep your light on for a couple of days at a time. they will get used to it.

I also presume that you have only had these tiger barbs for a short while. dont worry, they really like to explore and you will find that they will probably be your favourite fish before you know it (they are mine...)

Hi Steve,

I have 12 Barbs (10 tiger & 2 Golden), 2 red eye tetras and 3 cat fish, I've had them for around  6 months, they all seem to be shy of the light no matter how long I have it on for.
