Hi Beau,

Johanni's are fairly easy to breed. We even get them to breed in the shop on a regular occassion without doing anything in particular.
One thing i do suggest though,
plenty of water changes as in 80% weekly
pH of around 7.6
high hardness
good quality fish foods such as tetra color granules
plenty of territorial space. i use pvc pipes cut into various lengths, some with end caps, some without. works like a dream.

I also suggest going to the Aquarium Society of Victoria. They meet once a month in Clifton Hill. The last Thursday of the month. They have plenty of extra advice from some very experienced fish keepers, and there is always some presenter of note talking about a fish topic every month.
good luck!

Aquarium Society of Victoria website

+1 for what Steve said.

The boys can get stroppy if they don't have enough territory they will then ignore the females and fight amongst themselves if that happens just remove some of the offenders to another tank or get rid of them (sell, trade etc), maybe cull them  :bad: :diablo:   .

I don't do 80% water changes though, 10% to 30% dependent on the week as I don't condition (apart from prime) or use a buffer except in the tank - filter if it's needed.

thanks for the advice guys just one more thing.

I've noticed that one of my Johanni fish who was a orange before, is now displaying electric blue on the fins and the main colour is changing to a blue tinge, it also is showing vertical stripes along it's body, but i thought the males had horizontal ones :S alot of images I've seen havn't been so helpful.

is my so called "female" Johanni really a male?

cheers
